The Mazda Stereo!!!!!!

This has been my on going project ever since I've had the car...  My first real stereo I had put in when I was in San Diego in 1994.   (I needed it to cruise the beach!)  But unfortunately for me, someone decided to steal that one back in 1995.  So at that time I decided to redo everything, starting with the subs:

As some of you will realize, this is what you have to work with in the back of an RX-7.  My plan was simple:  Step 1) Put two 10" subs where those two holes are.  Step 2) Hide the amps back by the spare tire in the space in front of the rear tail lights.

First came the sub box.  Believe it or not, there really is a lot of room there.  I took my measurements and came up with this:

I didn't run the box all the way to the front because I didn't want it to interfere with the seats when I kicked them back. (See below)

This is the bottom of the finished box...  Its made completely out of 3/4" plywood.  I did that because it had to be solid.  Getting some of those angles was kind of hard, and I had to pull out the old geometry book to get them right.  Right before I put the top on, I rubberized the inside with undercoating.

Ok, so I forgot to take pictures from the last step to the finished product...  I guess I got a little to involved with the project.  Anyway, this shows the 10" woofers sitting in there homes.  In the center you can see the capacitor and the fuse blocks for the amps.  THE CAPACITOR IS A MUST!!!!!  Otherwise you'll be replacing your alternator every 6 months.  (I was on my 3rd before I put this baby in, now my alternator is 2 years old and running strong!)

Also notice the diagonal part.  That is the exact angle as the stock box that used to be there.  This allows my seats to go all the way back.

Here is the "Stealth" mode and open mode with the carpet pulled back.  I don't want anybody to know what's under there!

Here is the 4 channel amp tucked neatly in front of the tail lights.  Its actually pretty east to get it in there, you just have to cut some metal out with a grinder.  The main reason for putting the amps back here was security.  Those suckers are in there and they are not coming out without some "Special" tools...  The second reason would be space!  I saved a ton of room putting the amps here!

And that is all you see!!!!

This is the MTX sub amp on the opposite side.  There is plenty of air in there for cooling!

I don't know if this is very clear, but can you spot the tweeter?

Rear speaker tower will take up to an 8" driver!!!  I only have a 6" and it fits perfectly.

THE REST OF THE SYSTEM:

Sony CDX-680 head unit

Kenwood 4 channel amp (50w x 4)

MTX 2 channel amp (Bridged 400 x 1)

Two MTX 10" 5000 series.  (8 ohm)

Infinity speakers in the stock locations...

I'm pretty proud of the final product so far.  When the car is closed up, there is now way of knowing what is inside.  It looks like a regular stereo with factory speakers.  I guess I'm just trying to prevent my car from getting violated again.  If a thief can't see anything worth while in the car, he's not going to rip a hole in your door with a screw driver, tear out the lock mechanism and strip your stereo out...
