Bönez Air Intake kit
Installation difficulty? Easy
Total time: ~.5hours
DISCUSSION:
This is a simple upgrade that anyone can do. The kit that I bought came from Rotary Performance this time. These guys are great. They are very helpful on the phone and always willing to give advice on how to improve your RX-7. Their Email replies can be rather slow sometimes though so I would suggest using the phone here!
The whole point of this upgrade is to get more air into the engine. This is more important to the turbo cars than the non-turbo cars, but an increase in airflow is helpful in all situations. This kit replaces the stock air filter and the air box that dominates the front right corner of the engine compartment.
INSTALLATION:
Remove everything! The instructions that come with the kit are simple but compete. In a nutshell: You remove the entire air box from the car and disconnect the hose that goes to the air pump. On the bottom of the air box is the Air Flow Meter. You need this so you remove it from the box. You them mount a small bracket on the meter and reinstall it back in the car 90 degrees from the position that it used to sit. Finally you slap on the K&N filter and install a smaller air filter on the air pump.
RESULTS
The increase in HP was nothing to really write home about. I felt a little more power going up the hills where I live and I could definitely HEAR the car sucking air now! At this time I havent replaced the exhaust system so the extra air coming in is getting blocked on the way out. I plan on fixing this soon.
For the turbo guys: You might want to consider building an air box that separates the hot engine compartment air with the cooler outside air. The point of this is that cooler air is denser and will allow more O2 into the engine.
